what is the best free video editing (movie maker) software for making machinima and gaming montages?

I have a capture card and need a softwre program to edit what I record. When I get the clips on to my computer they are displayed as Quicktime files. Any suggestions?

If you have a mac you can download iMovie HD (iMovie ’08 has no special effects and iMovie ’09 isn’t free). iMovie HD 6 has good effects and transitions and you can easily upload videos to it and edit it. If you have Windows you can use Windows Movie Maker.

What program lets you make a video montage?

I need to make a video montage for my sweet sixteen party. Does anybody now what program/s there are to make a video montage. Where I can clip movies and pictures and make it a video. I have a macbook and i need a program fast. Thanks and please help.
